"The Power of Purpose:

Why Knowing Your 'Why' Changes Everything"

Story for Month 3, Week 1:

"Nick’s Journey: From Lost to Purpose-Driven"

Nick was a high school senior with everything going for him—or so it seemed. He had decent grades, a spot on the soccer team, and a supportive family cheering him on. But deep down, Nick felt stuck. Every day felt the same, like he was just going through the motions. He didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life, and the pressure to figure it out weighed heavily on him.

One day, during an assembly, a guest speaker walked onto the stage. She wasn’t flashy or loud, but there was something about her presence that made everyone sit up and listen. Her first words were simple: “Do you know your ‘why’?”

Nick frowned. Why? He had heard people talk about goals and dreams before, but no one had ever asked him why they mattered.

The speaker continued: “Your ‘why’ is your purpose—the reason behind everything you do. It’s what drives you forward when life gets tough and keeps you focused when distractions pull you away. But finding your ‘why’ isn’t always easy. That’s why I use something called the ‘Six Levels of Why.’”

She explained the exercise: “Start with one goal or dream you have and ask yourself, ‘Why is this important?’ Then take your answer and ask ‘why’ again. Do this six times—dig deeper each time—and you’ll uncover the heart of your purpose.”

Nick couldn’t stop thinking about it. That night, he grabbed his notebook and wrote down one of his biggest goals: “I want to succeed in school.” Then he started asking himself “why.”

  • Why is this important?“Because I want to get into a good college.”

  • Why does that matter?“Because I want to have a successful career.”

  • Why is that important?“Because I want to make enough money to support myself and my family.”

  • Why does that matter?“Because I want to give my family a better life than I’ve had.”

  • Why is that important?“Because I want to help others who don’t have opportunities like me.”

  • Why does that matter? Nick paused here, staring at his notebook. Then he wrote: “Because helping others thrive makes me feel alive—it’s what gives my life meaning.”

Nick sat back, stunned by what he had uncovered. His goal wasn’t just about grades or college—it was about creating opportunities for others to succeed. That was his “why.”

Over the next few weeks, Nick started seeing everything differently. Schoolwork stopped feeling like a chore because it was now part of something bigger—a stepping stone toward his purpose. He joined a volunteer program at a local youth center and realized how much joy it brought him to mentor younger kids and help them believe in themselves.

When challenges came—like struggling with a tough math class or feeling overwhelmed by college applications—Nick leaned on his “why” for strength. He reminded himself why it all mattered, and suddenly those obstacles felt smaller.

By the end of the year, Nick wasn’t just surviving—he was thriving. He had clarity, motivation, and resilience like never before because he knew his purpose.

Lesson for Students:

Nick’s story shows that finding your “why” isn’t just about setting goals—it’s about digging deep to understand what truly drives you at your core. The “Six Levels of Why” exercise helped Nick uncover his purpose, which gave him clarity and strength to face challenges head-on.

What’s your “why”? Take time this week to try the “Six Levels of Why” exercise yourself—you might be surprised by what you discover!

Because when you know your purpose, everything changes.
